New London is a small city (of approximately 26,000 people) in Southeastern Connecticut that combines historic New England charm with a wide range of cultural and recreational activities.
After several years of hard work, research, planning and laying the groundwork for our food co-op, we secured an 8,000 square foot location for our coop. The space is on the corner of Broad and Huntington Streets in downtown New London. The site is locally known as the old “California Fruit” building. It is directly across from the courthouse at 13 Broad Street.
On February 2, 2008, Groundhog Day, Fiddleheads opened a weekly Saturday Winter Farmer’s Market in the coop location. Since March of 2008 we also offer packaged dry goods for sale. We also added more open days on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2:30-6:30. We also have farmer/ vendors on those days. As of January 31 2009 we are expanding our weekday hours from 11:30 to 6:30 and Saturday hours from 9-4.
Most of our packaged goods are of the organic/natural variety. We have continued to add new products to our product lines. In the summer of 2008 we added refrigerated and frozen food items. In early fall of 2008 we added bulk goods and coffees. Between the Coop Market and the farmers we are able to offer a strongly comprehensive natural foods coop. We will also continue to add other products. We will continue to work on raising the money to finish the renovations to the coop and add needed equipment. Currently the coop does not have any paid staff is being operated on a totally volunteer basis. |
